Crisis Call Center’s Youth Suicide Prevention Education Outreach Program educates teenagers about risk factors and warning signs of suicide.
The Youth Outreach Program also provides a forum in which students can voice their questions and/or concerns about all aspects of their lives. They reveal histories of secret suicidal ideation and often share experiences involving abuse, family dysfunction and substance abuse. The areas of greatest concern to young people are problem solving and emotional coping skills.
Adolescents often suffer from persistent harassment by peers. Teens ask pointed questions and confide painful slights and bullying experiences around issues of religion, sexual orientation, sexuality, dating relationships, race, social status and physical size and appearance. In a high school survey (conducted by Peters, Kochanek & Murphy. 1998), up to 60 percent of the subjects reported experiencing periods of suicidal ideation.
The Crisis Call Center’s Youth Outreach Program is designed to reduce teen suicide. The program addresses the issue of adolescent suicide on a variety of levels, providing suicide prevention education to adolescents who may, at some point in their lives, experience suicidal thoughts or be faced with a friend of family member who is suicidal. The program emphasizes:
